“Ooku” is a drama set in an alternative feudal Japan, where a mysterious disease has caused a drastic decrease in the male population. As a result, females have taken over all important roles in society, including holding political positions. The current ratio of males to females is 1:4, creating a completely matriarchal society. The head of the Tokugawa shogunate, the most powerful female in the country, is allowed to keep a harem of handsome but unproductive males known as “Ooku.” This unique and challenging social structure has been in place for 80 years since the initial outbreak of the disease. The drama explores the dynamics and power struggles within this society, adapted from the popular manga series by Yoshinaga Fumi. With 10 episodes, each running for 45 minutes, “Ooku” airs on Tuesday nights.
